Wenbei

---The Third in a Series of Sketches of Beijingers

ByBi Ruxie.

This is a true story of  the mixed-race brothers during the Cultural Revolution. In 1988, I published a series of sketches of "Beijingers" in China Spring Magazine, under the pseudonym of Zhang Run.Before I left China, I had a valuable relationship with Zhang Run; at that time, Zhang Run was a biology student at Beijing Normal University, a pure virgin.

At the end of 1988, Wenbei's youngest brother Wenling came to New York to thank me; I smiled bitterly: Wenbei was the first time in new China that security was unprecedented! The miracle of the Wenbei, deserves to be as famous as the Swallow Li San.

Later, when I look at the 50th (60th) anniversary review of the great achievements of the new Chinese public security front, only the two kings of the Northeast, Beijing Baibao Mountain and other big cases (known as a landmark case), but no Wenbei’s case, I can't help but shake my head and sigh.

The case of Wenbei is too big, so there is not a single word in the history of public order in New China; just as the case of June Fourth is too big, so there is not a single word in the history of public order in New China. The chronicles of the People's Republic of China don't contain a single word.

Also, in late 2015, I met mathematics guru Zhang Yitang at Princeton University, a man with a photographic memory. He can recite the original text of "Wenbei", not a word! I'm stunned!

This year is Wenbei's 70th birthday, in memory of him.

Men. Woman. Man plus woman, so there is the product of love or sexual desire, i.e., a child.

Chinese. Foreigner. Chinese plus foreigner, and so there was a mixed race. For over a hundred years, the country was weak. Therefore, it was inevitable that the Chinese people would have the mentality of pandering to the foreigners, and the tall foreigners would walk the streets of Beijing, accepting the attention of the citizens. , well enough to satisfy its chauvinistic vanity.

But this foreign devil must be an authentic foreign devil, a real foreign devil, a childish foreign devil, a HUNDRED PER CENT (1) foreign devil!

If your foreign devil is not pure, one-half, one-fourth or even one-eighth Chinese, you are worthless. I did! The people of China have already prepared a laurel for you: "mongrel".

Strange to say, if gold contains half copper, it is still worth more than copper; if wine is mixed with half water, it is still worth more than water; and the Reader foreign blood, if mixed with varying proportions of Chinese blood, is worth less! In the eyes of foreigners, mulattoes are inferior to Chinese. Have you read "The Ugly Chinese" by the Taiwanese writer Bo Yang? If you're unlucky enough to be born a half-breed, you'll have to learn about the "ugly Chinese" or "ugly Chinese"!

A good friend of mine, Wenbei, who is of mixed Chinese and French descent, once complained: "All countries in the world value their mixed-race children, and this is the flower of friendship. Easy?!  Fuck him! ......."

Wenbei said this in the evening of a mid-winter day in 1969, outside the west gate of Peking University. The dim light from the street lamp outlined his distinctive image: large head, broad forehead, square chin and brown hair. Anyone would have immediately distinguished him from the Chinese. If he were to appear in a swimming suit, he would be a symbol of strength and courage. Revealing his own strength, habitually pretending to be afraid of the cold, hunched over and shrinking his head, his arms crossed and pocketed into the cuffs of his Chinese cotton jacket.

This is Wenbei - with a look that is not our own, but is full of city slang.

At that moment, we were standing outside the school gates, trying to blend in and watch a free movie. In the large dining hall was a screening of "The Legend of the Red Lantern" with piano accompaniment.

Wenbei insisted on climbing over the wall to enter the school: "The Peking University School Guards are very sharp-eyed, and when they see me, they will stare at me...".

"Why?" I was puzzled.

"There are foreigners in North Dakota who are afraid I'll hook up with them, fuck..."

After that, Wenbei performed his amazing wall climbing kung fu: he gently exhaled, ran a few steps, stood up, and stepped on the brick crack halfway up the wall with his left toe as if he was stepping on a ladder, and hooked the wall with his right hand.

The whole set was completed in three seconds.

This was truly a masterstroke. This is the ultimate move that Manbei lived and died by. Ultimate!

Wenbei was the first mixed-race child I befriended. During the Cultural Revolution, there were hundreds of mixed-race children living in Beijing, the more famous being the Ye family (Chinese American), the Hü family (Chinese), the Hü family (Chinese), and the Hü family (Chinese). (French), Li family (Chinese and Russian); Tan family (Chinese and Russian), Beijing Institute of Foreign Languages, Wang family (Chinese and Russian), Jianguomenwai, First Machinery Industry Department The Hua family (China and France), the Lin family (China and Finland) at Beijing Normal University... and so on.

Of course, this refers to the private sector. As for the Li Li Sanjia (China-Russia), Xiao Sanjia (China-Germany), etc... in the upper echelons of the CCP, it's a different story.

The vast majority of mixed-race children in Beijing come from high-ranking intellectual families, the combination of which is probably the story of their father, who studied in a foreign country when he was young, and after a few years of hard work, obtained both a degree and a wife, and returned to mainland China to serve the new regime... The story is similar.

Wenbei's father, Xinmou, studied celestial mechanics at a university in Lyon, France, in his early years. Unlike most international students, he accepted the communist faith in France and was guided by a young and beautiful French girl. After his marriage, Xinmou Fang learned that his wife was a member of the French Communist Party and fanatically admired Stalin, Dorais and Mao Zedong.

France has always been a place of seduction for the Chinese Communists. Deng Fa is the only member of the Communist Party in China who has returned to China. Deng Fa was the only member of the Communist Party who was a giant, and so Xinmou engaged in secret activities under his command.

Upon his return to China, Xinmou was recognized as a rare talent within the Communist Party, having worked as Zhou Enlai's French translator and his wife's work as a French teacher and compiler.

Wenbei was the eldest son of a family with revolutionary traditions and cultural upbringing, and had seven younger siblings. It was a testament to the passionate nature of the French people that Wenbei was the eldest son of seven siblings and the eldest in a family with a strong revolutionary tradition and cultural upbringing.

As a child, he was said to have been very intelligent and tall, and his parents were very fond of him. But as soon as he enters kindergarten, he is attacked by a group of Nazi dolls... How can he be so clever? So fist fights and kicks twist together.

The widespread discrimination against mulattoes in Chinese society made Wenbei afraid to expose his identity to strangers.

We met at a friend's house. Wenbei was wearing a school badge of "Affiliated High School of the Central Institute for Nationalities" on his chest (a fake, he was a student of the 47th High School). He is a student of the 47th High School), smilingly shook my hand, and opened his mouth to tell a lot of gibberish: "My name is Haimenti," he said. Kazakhs. Our old man was the secretary of the regional committee of the Xinjiang Х Kazakh Autonomous Oblast and a member of the Communist Party for 41 years. He also knows Mao Zemin (brother of Mao Zedong). I'll take you to Xinjiang when I have time - I've got plenty of acquaintances all over the country. ......."

I was lulled into a frenzy by him. A few days later, Wenbei's card was revealed: Xinmou and my uncle were classmates in France.

Wenbei's face does not change: "Buddy, let me tell you, I can't show my face easily because I don't know what I'm talking about. Since we all know each other from home, from now on you are my 'porcelain'."

From then on, I became his "porcelain".

At that time, social order was in chaos and secondary school students had no classes to attend, like a stream of misfortune flowing everywhere... Wenbei, on the other hand, was devoted to his university dream.

At Tsinghua University, while the battle was raging, Wenbei snuck into the Tsinghua Garden to see the labs destroyed by sticks; at Peking University, he was sitting by the Lake of Wei Ming with an original copy of Montesquieu's "Notes on the Persians" between his legs, reading... No wonder, as a high school graduate of the sixth year, Wenbei had one foot in the door of the university!

Mao Zedong's latest top directive to intellectuals to go to the countryside crushed his dreams.

The Х family had two young men of the right age - Wenbei and his eldest brother Wenzhong - who joined the army. The old ladies of the residents' committee demanded that they be allowed to visit the family, but they did not let them. Wenzhong, a junior high school graduate in the sixth or eighth year, left for a farm in Yunnan.

But Wenbei had a different strategy. Many years ago, he had contracted tuberculosis and spent half a year in a sanatorium in Xiaotangshan, where he insisted that his lungs were infected. At that time, he insisted that there were still shadows on his lungs and bluffed the workers' propaganda team in charge of student assignments, using a series of medical terms with Latin in them. Captain.

To celebrate this victory, Wenbei bought me an octagon of meatloaf at a restaurant in the Dongcheng district. Don't you think it's funny? He's half French. He's so petty!

In fact, "there was a great deal of difficulty". At the beginning of the Cultural Revolution, Wenbei's mother was dismissed from her job and became a housewife with no income. Three hundred dollars a month to make ends meet. Thirty dollars per capita, not far off from the average citizen's family.

When the steaming hot pork cakes were served on the table, Wen Bei swallowed the old dried bai dried pork and recounted his feelings: ".......it seems that the Cultural Revolution has been going on for three years and five years.... I can't go to university in China. I want to apply to France to go to Sobran University, where Madame Curie used to teach. You've heard of the school, right? ......."

A few days later, Wenbei disappeared - not to France, but to a "study class on strengthening organization and discipline of Mao Zedong Thought" organized by the Beijing Geological Institute.

The so-called "study course" was in fact a kind of privately run detention center. The reason why Wenbei was not sent to the "study class" at the Academy of Sciences was that the guards at the "study class" at the Geological Institute were tougher than the guards at the "study class" at the Academy. He was quite experienced in dealing with a brawny man like Wenbei.

For the next six months, Wenbei did not show his face in society.

When I saw him again, Wenbei was a different person: his face was covered with a layer of bad luck, and the pores on his cheeks were coarse and ugly because of it. It was as if he could no longer smile, did not curse his mother, did not speak, words like "university" and "Montesquieu" disappeared from his lips, and often announcing some sensational plans...

"Sooner or later, I'm going to set fire to the Tiananmen Square, and I'm going to throw oil underneath it. By the time the incense burns out and causes a fire, I'll be long gone! ......."

"The wheel of fortune changes in twenty years. Sooner or later, when I live with these bastards, I'll cut them up one by one and feed them to the wild dogs! ......."

And so on and so forth.

In those years, the class struggle was always held high by the authorities, and the label of "counter-revolutionary" flew everywhere. Wenbei's wild words alone were enough to send him to the eighteenth circle of hell. Fortunately, those who heard about it were only a few close friends, and no one took it seriously, not to mention snitching on him.

After this, Wenbei's lifestyle suddenly changed a lot. He seemed to be very wealthy and was often out and about in fancy restaurants.

One day I walked into Moscow after seeing the Japanese film "Ah, the Navy" (screened internally for criticism) at the Beijing Exhibition Hall Cinema Theater In the restaurant, we saw Wenbei and a seductive girl named "Fifi" sitting at the table, with cold dishes, hot dishes, desserts and drinks in front of them.  Colorful, just like a spring garden. Once upon a time, Wenbei was the one who used to fill his main meal with baked fritters.

"Hey, it's not like it used to be, bird and gun." I joked and leaned in.

Wenbei welcomed me to sit down and ordered the waiter to set another plate. He skilfully waved his knife and fork (it's a mixed race after all!) Fifi is a beautiful and gentle person.

Fei Fei is a money-conscious, pretty face, notoriously notorious, who diligently brings curry chicken to her mouth while being coquettishly sophisticated. While diligently putting curry chicken pieces into her mouth, she pouted with a sophisticated coquettishness: "Oh, what kind of Western food is this? Saying Russian isn't Russian, saying Anglo-French isn't Anglo-French...four different things!"

Wenbei said slowly and matter-of-factly: "Miss, you will have a bite to eat, if not for Premier Zhou Zhou's approval, Beijing people still want to eat Western food? Go sit where it's cool! ......."

He was a great admirer of Premier Zhou Enlai. In the early days of the Cultural Revolution, the Red Guards raided the homes of the people in Beijing, and had it not been for Xinmou, who hung Zhou Enlai's autographed letter in a frame in the central hall. I'm afraid the house would have been smashed to pieces!

After a good meal, Wenbei proudly took the beauty home. Afterwards, he said, "Fifi's piece of material, although the asking price is quite high, it's worth it! Fucking a pot (6), it's so fucking fun, it's better than staying in bed 'brother and son five hit one' (masturbation)..."

"Where did you get so much money?" I asked.

The old man and the old lady implemented the policy and the savings were returned! (7) It's a lot of money, enough to last me a lifetime! ......."

Eat, drink and be merry, wine and beauty. Wenbei was a real sight for a while. The ship has a bottom, the bottom is rotten, but the French are rich!

However, one day I went to Xisi on an errand and accidentally pierced Wenbei's secret. I saw Wenbei's mother walking into a pawn shop (a pawnshop under the socialist system) with a bag of clothes, so I stood outside the door. Not long after, Wenbei's mother came out empty-handed, and I went up to her and asked, "Auntie, your deposit has been returned, why are you still selling things?"

Wenbei's mother shrugged her shoulders, "Where is the deposit? A monthly living wage, a little bit..."

When I pretended to unintentionally tell this to Wenbei, the guy immediately turned the tables, "Kid, if you dare to chew your tongue out there. Don't blame me for being mean! ......."

I didn't allow him to speak, he put on a smile again: "I said 'porcelain' ah, you keep your mouth that tighter, or I'll fold that day. (8) Get in there, I'll hate you in jail! ......."

Big prison?

That evening, Wenbei invited me to eat roast duck at the Hongbin Restaurant opposite the telegraph building. Each person a roast duck, eat half and throw half. He was so wasteful that many of the customers looked away.

Obviously, Wenbei's money is not easy to come by. However, I don't care. The world is in chaos, why should I be immune? I remember a poem written by the old revolutionary Xu Teli when he was young: "There is no good reward for doing good, and no evil reward for doing evil. Bandits and robbers?"

There is a good reason for goodness. Confucius.

There is evil in evil. The thieves and planters.

After roast duck, we walked down West Chang'an Street towards Xidan. At the beginning of the day, there are many men and women wandering around the crossroads. Wenbei nods to all of them.

"A girl in a men's National Defense Green uniform - apparently a young man who had returned to the city as a queue-jumper - approached him cheekily.

In the Xidan region, Wenbei again became the son of the ХХ Kazakh Autonomous Oblast's Party Secretary, Hai Menti.

Wenbei threw her a lecherous kiss: "We'll go some other time, I don't know if I want a beer. Forget it today...my brother is back from Yunnan, and I'm going to pick him up at Beijing Station..."

I thought it was a joking remark. Who knows, Wenzhong really came back. He was four or five years younger than Wenbei, with a long, white face and a body that resembled the handsome man in the painting. He is not as tall as Wenbei, but he is quite sturdy. He is usually silent and quiet, and occasionally speaks in a gentle manner, without foul language.

The two half-blood brothers became a team, leaving early in the morning and returning home late at night.

Since then, a series of major cases have occurred in Beijing-

The belongings of Brigadier General Hege, who acted as an advance officer for the US President's special envoy Dr. Kissinger's first visit to China, were stolen from the luxury hotel where he was staying.

The apartment of the Foreign Experts Bureau of the State Council was broken into and locked in the middle of the night, and a large amount of personal belongings of foreign experts were stolen.

A dormitory for foreigners at Peking University was burglarized.

Theft from expatriate dormitory at Tsinghua University.

Burglary in expatriate dormitory at Beijing Foreign Studies University (BFSU).

The theft from the foreigners' dormitory of Beijing Language Institute.

........

"No foreign affairs are trivial" is an ironclad rule in the new Chinese bureaucracy. The Military Control Committee of the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau reported to the central government while organizing a task force with a deadline to solve the case....

Solve the case? When the people talk about the Public Security Bureau, most of them are scared to death, thinking that the 9-9-9 are all heavenly warriors with three heads and six arms....... actually. They are also very limited in what they can do.

I have a relative who is a military representative in the city's Public Security Bureau and is also a coarse old man, who treats me like one of his own and says everything to the outside world: "...and recently also Out of nowhere, there's a gang of thieves who are targeting foreigners. Premier Zhou was furious. He told us to catch the thieves, but where can we find these bastards?  Hands! In my estimation, 80% of them are high ranking Foreign Ministry officials, who are bold, careful, watch a lot of foreign detective movies, and have knowledge of the crime. Then again, they were all able to study abroad, but now they've been driven to the countryside to jump in, how can they feel happy? They are looking for foreigners to break into their homes and break the locks, creating international influence and discrediting the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. ......."

The Public Security Bureau usually solves major cases on two legs: one is the Criminal Police Force, the other is the masses. Since the "Five Pagodas Temple" could not intervene, it had to mobilize the masses. As a result, surprise "household register checks" are carried out in various districts (with the main focus on the compounds of various party, government and military organs), and all kinds of suspicious elements are investigated by the The police station was lined up and screened...it was a lot of fun.

I have a somewhat better idea: these cases can't be unrelated to Wenbei. Exactly!

A few days later, another theft shakes Beijing: the Beijing Opera troupe's "Wisdom and Courage" production site is stolen. Two boxes of props - the faux fur coat worn by Yang Zirong after going to the mountain - were gone!

Perhaps you'll think it's a trivial matter - how much are two boxes of props worth? Compared to Brigadier Hegg's gold and silver is just a small thing.

No, no! Don't forget, at that time, when Jiang Qing was in power in the Mao dynasty, the eight "model operas" became the lullabies of the new era of the proletariat; Yu Huiyong, Hao Liang, and Liu Qingtang's generation was so rampant that it was like a revolutionary stronghold, but the "Model Operas" troupe was so heavily guarded that it was close to erecting a " The "Civil and military officials dismounted here" stone tablet.

In the midst of all this limelight, someone actually dared to touch the ground on the head of the Imperial Court!

It is said that this artificial fur costume is a scientific research of a factory in Shanghai, the newspaper hailed as "the great victory of Mao Zedong Thought." . This costume is as thin as gauze and light as silk, so the actors can wear it without sweating even in the summer. Baby.

Baby's been stolen!

Jiang Qing is furious at the news (she's supposed to be an eccentric woman with no wind or waves, not to mention someone sticking a mallet in her eye?). I'd like to call the people in charge of the Ministry of Public Security and the Public Security Bureau together (my relative was also in the last seat) and scold them at the top of his voice. ...the normally dignified public security officers were terrified and their faces were as pale as dirt. Jiang Qing declared the case a "counter-revolutionary political case" and ordered that it be solved by a certain date, and so on.

To solve the case? Within two days, there was a new development in the case - a couple of farmers in Qinglongqiao, Haidian District, were fishing for fish in the canal and fished out two boxes, which they opened. It's all faux fur costumes, strung up with scissors, in disarray!

My relative who was a military representative of the Public Security Bureau exclaimed, "Comrade Jiang Qing is worthy of being a wise flag bearer, his level is high! Some comrades in the bureau thought it was an ordinary criminal case or a prank played by children and teenagers, but Comrade Jiang Qing immediately saw that it was sabotage by class enemies. The Cultural Revolution, amazing! ......."

--It was only many years later that I learned that it was these two boxes of costumes that sowed the seeds of Wenbei's death. Jiang Qing had the power of life and death in his hands, and that was no lie.

Since then, there have been many major thefts in Beijing: from hotels, restaurants, apartments and even kindergartens. In all fairness, this last target was not a very honorable one, as it was "unethical" to take money, food and oil stamps from children.

It's not a good idea to take money and oil stamps away from children. One day, my relative, who was drunk, revealed: "...after more than a year of fussing, we finally have a clue - the criminal is not a child of a high-ranking official! It's the two bastards! Well, that's a good one - a jar to catch a turtle in..."

He said that two suspicious-looking draftsmen had been seen recently near the Overseas Chinese Apartments in Garden Village. They were dressed in rags and hats, with baskets hanging from their shoulders and sickles and towels built in. However, these two men, with their fair complexion and tall noses, are by no means members of the commune, and so they attract the attention of the watchman.

At night, the janitor heard a noise in the silence, so he got up to check. Outside the walls of the apartment, he was surprised to find a flatbed full of valuables such as a TV, refrigerator, sofa bed, tweed coat and so on. Tricycle, with a flashlight sweeping left and right, shines a light on a bare-chested man, the same haymaker I saw in daylight!

The janitor, knowing that the visitor was not good, only had the nerve to interrogate, "Who are you?"

The Han smiled and laughed, living like a Maitreya Buddha: "Helping people move."

On instinct, the janitor froze again and blurted out, "Are you Chinese or foreigner? ......."

Before the words died down, the janitor felt a wind at the back of his head, and before he could react, he was hit by an iron object at the back of his head, and he knew nothing more....

The blow wasn't very hard. When the janitor woke up, the first thing he said was, "Bastard... Bastard did it!"

So, the Public Security Bureau in Beijing set up a dragnet to find the "bastard"!

Division 8 of the Municipal Public Security Bureau (Household Registration Office) compiles information on all young men of mixed race and then examines them one by one....

The Wenbei and Wenzhong brothers are the two suspects who bear the brunt of the crime. Their identities and status make things difficult for the police: although Xinmou has stepped aside, he is, after all, a prominent figure in the Communist Party's top hierarchy. Fairly extensive personal relationships; his wife is French, and France was the first Western power to establish ambassadorial diplomatic relations with the new China. The importance of this is self-evident... In China, there has never been such a thing as "equality before the law".

After the case was solved, I learned from the military representative that the city bureau had set up a "secret" room on the 12th floor of the dormitory of the North Academy of Sciences in the Wenbei home. Secret agent kept a detailed daily record of the rise and fall of the Wenbei brothers; they found that the half-breed pair hardly went out during the day, and that the window was perpetually hung with the The thick window curtains are mysterious. And in the middle of the night, the two brothers go out together. There had been a "Thunderbolt" stalking them, but they got rid of him: north of Wen and Wenzhong preferred to climb over walls, but "Thunderbolt" was a public security school. Born, the skill is still a bit inferior....

During this time, there were a number of additional nefarious cases in the city of Beijing.

--A night-shift worker was robbed of a "Jeweled Flower" pocket watch (worth more than 30 yuan) on his way home and was knocked unconscious by an iron weapon.

--A middle-aged teacher returned home late at night and was knocked unconscious by a metal object while pulling out his keys at his door.

........

The City Public Security Bureau has finally got a bit of real evidence: the fuzzy footprints left on the doorstep of the middle-aged teacher at Peking University, which have been treated with special techniques.

To this end, they specially from the Inner Mongolia pastoral area to invite an old man. The old man, who has been herding sheep since childhood, is good at observing hoof prints and never deviates from them. He was regarded by the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Public Security Department as a soil expert. This time a special trip to Beijing, after examining the footprints photo, said: the perpetrator is between 1.70 to 1.75 meters tall, weighing about 85 kilograms. Walking like the wind, unsteady center of gravity....

This judgement coincides with the situation in Wenbei!

The Public Security Bureau was going to close the net, but they were afraid to do so - after all, this is a half-French species, not to be confused with ordinary Chinese people. Moreover, international contacts need to be restored, and several important French government officials are about to visit China, so they can't afford to be careless... So, by the 47th High School- -School to which Wenbei belonged - The head of the school came out to find out if he was going to be assigned a job: a security guard at an all-owned factory. It was a good job at the time.

The boy, full of revolutionary rhetoric, replied loudly: "...I come from a non-proletarian family, and I volunteer to join the army in a difficult place...Get out! A body of mud, a heart of red! ......."

Cut in line? At this time, the high tide of going to the countryside is over, and it's hard to arrange to send such a half-breed with an "iron heart for agriculture" to join the team!

The school leader half-heartedly said, "Wenbei, is this from your heart? ......."

Wenbei pounded his chest with a thud: "I promise Chairman Mao, if I say a single word of nonsense, I'll immediately go to hell. ......."

The school leaders were quite moved: "Well, well, what a generation educated by the Cultural Revolution! ......."

The twist of eight characters - quite twisted!

The first time I saw him was when he was in the middle of the night, when he was in the middle of the night, he was in the middle of the night, when he was in the middle of the night.

The Public Security Bureau was dumbfounded, thinking that the Wenbei brothers had fled the capital and were "floating" in the provinces. They judged that the two mixed-race children looked different from normal people, fleeing to the mainland is not easy to hide, it is likely that they fled to the Xinjiang region, mixing in the Among the ethnic minorities ... Wenbei's self-description as "Hai Minti" is the main basis for this judgment.

In fact, Wenbei and Wenzhong were still in Beijing. They hid in their sister Wen Nan's house and lived in peace for a few days.

What they did not expect was that arrest warrants had already been issued, awaiting only the capture of the half-breed brothers.

One day in mid-August 1972, the Wenbei brothers' stars were shining on their fate. Various stories have been circulated about the scene of their arrest, but the more credible is that of the military representative.

Wenbei and Wenzhong can't stand the loneliness anymore, and seeing that nothing is happening at their home in Zhong Guan Cun, they boldly go to Wangfujing to eat and drink, and are followed by Lei Zi, who follows them to their sister's home.

They are followed by Lei Zi, who follows them to her sister's house. The house of Wen Nan is surrounded by hundreds of plainclothes policemen, and Wenbei is unable to escape.

As soon as they step out of the dormitory building, they see some strong men chatting in the shade of a tree, and their eyes are furtive.

Wenbei and Wenzhong run away and return to the fourth floor of his sister's house, locking the door and taking down the bed board behind the door....

Wenbei orders Wenzhong to guard the gate, and he turns over a one-catty Beijing food stamp (!). --which, according to post-mortems, totaled 70,000 pounds of food stamps), placed in an enameled foot wash basin and torched....

At this time, dressed in official and plainclothes public security officers will be surrounded by the dormitory building, but also to attract a large number of onlookers, the scene is very lively ... ... ...

The policemen ordered the Huynh brothers to open the door, but no one answered. So, while they are looking for the head of the household, Wennan, they quickly ask their superiors for permission to break into the house if necessary....

Shangfeng ordered that the offensive war be waged by party policy; if it is ineffective, the iron hand of the dictatorship of the proletariat be applied, and no net be missed....

Just as the public security officers are about to break down the door, Wennan is brought in. The police use the key to open the door and successfully capture Wenzhong, but there is no sign of Wenbei....

Could it be that he's taken off? ... ... the police officers looked at each other.

At that moment, the hundreds of police officers and a similar number of people gathered downstairs were privileged to witness a performance no less spectacular than that of the Flying Trapeze artists - a performance by the circus.

Man Pei appeared on the fourth floor balcony, to a "drought onion", jumped on the concrete railings, in a flash, he climbed the leaky road again, light as a swallow to climb to the fifth floor platform.

After getting onto the platform, Wenbei raced to the other end, tugged on the edge of the narrow wall with both hands, and probed in the air... He tested it with his gaze the distance between themselves and an old tree, decisively release their hands, while kicking the wall with one foot deadly force, with a reactionary force over the old tree! It's a dangerous branch! ........

Amidst the unanimous screams of all the spectators, Wenbei miraculously caught the dangerous branch, and with an off-center leg, rode on a bowl-thick tree, looking down on the crowd with an expressionless face from a height of more than ten meters above the ground.......

The police, as they move the ladder up the tree, use the usual technique of "policy attack": "Wenbei, you be good and come down, have something to say and discuss...".

Wenbei calmly replied, "Go down? So you can arrest me?"

According to witnesses, the tone was like asking for the price of pork in a market.

The police were out of ideas. At that time, the armed police force had not yet been established, the police officers equipment is still very backward, weekday rely on an official clothing, enough to scare the market hoodlums, shrewd pickpockets. The police were really helpless when they met a flying thief like Wenbei.

With a sneer on his face, Wenbei jumped between the branches with ease and ease, causing the police below to get busy again....

The police didn't dare to fire their guns without orders from Shangfeng, and they were afraid that Wenbei would fall down and die on the spot due to his crime (or mistake), which would make it impossible for them to deliver, so they hid their hands and gave Wenbei a chance to take advantage of the situation-...

I saw him put "more like a leisurely stroll" of the graceful school, the limbs were put on different trees, take a nap, and then to another nearby building to move the body dexterously ... ...

The crowd was dumbfounded: could it be that this half-French "bastard" had mastered the ancient Chinese secret art of lightness?

Suddenly, it was too late, too soon, Wenbei roared, a Harrier somersault, and actually stood firmly on the balcony of the second floor of the building.......He kicked the glass with his foot wearing blue shoes and broke into the room.

This time, the police and onlookers flocked back to the building...the crowd was boisterous.

This building next to a brick wall, more than one person high, built with anti-theft broken glass. Previously told, Man Pei is a first-class expert in climbing over the wall, as long as he was covered with the wall, almost incurable! This time, Wenbei jumped from the second floor to the wall again, then scampered into a building ruin like a fish....

If the shouts of chasing Wenbei hadn't alerted a group of farmers near the Central Weather Bureau, he would have slipped through the net. When Wenbei was sprinting ahead of the police and about to enter the crop field, he took a hoe on his ankle and immediately fell down. I've got a mouth full of mud!

Manbei was finally arrested.

According to my relative, when the Public Security Bureau task force confirmed that the series of major crimes were committed by the Wenbei brothers and had nothing to do with anyone else, they couldn't help but be shocked by the criminal energy of the pair of mixed-race children.

Unprecedented in history... the history of law and order in New China! The case of Wenbei and Х Wenzhong was overseen by the central government, with Premier Zhou Enlai personally intervening, but the Public Security Bureau had no authority to handle it at all.

Premier Zhou Enlai's own words of advice on the case were: "Down with it, down with it, down with it, down with it, down with it."

I'm not sure if you think this is a good idea or not. He is a politician who is skilled in the art of power politics. He is also the father of the Х clan, Xinmou, with whom he has a close friendship.

(The following year, a delegation of Chinese scientists visited the United States for the first time at the invitation of the delegation. One sentence: "I can save the life of Xinmou's son." (---a variation from the above instruction.)

At the same time, Jiang Qing's all-pervading long arm was extended. Since Lin Biao's death in a plane crash, the Zhou-Jiang rivalry has been the main thread that has shaped Chinese politics. This is a well-known fact.

The sons of Zhou Enlai's old friends, the Wenbei brothers had the audacity to make a play for the "mother" (as Jiang Qing once called himself), but they were half-French and could not be treated equally with the Chinese.

After the arrest of the Wenbei brothers, their mother's relatives launched a rescue operation in Beijing and Paris at the same time. His mother went to the French embassy in Beijing in tears, while his uncle, Colonel Guillot, politicized the issue in Paris, calling for the attention of all sectors of society to the Chinese government. the unfair treatment of mixed French and French children in China and asked French Foreign Minister Schumann, who will be visiting China, to forward a petition letter to the Chinese government. ........

As a result, Jiang Qing and his gang dared not make any moves. It must be remembered that after Mao Zedong entered the seventies, he came up with a strategic idea of uniting the United States against Russia, and Paris had become the main contact point for Chinese and American diplomatic representatives. This, coupled with the intermittent Paris talks on Vietnam, makes France even more pivotal in international affairs....

The whole case was handled in a confusing and confusing manner due to the many underlying factors that influenced the fate of the Wenbei brothers.

Immediately after the arrest of the Wenbei brothers, the Public Security Bureau (PSB) raided the family's homes in Beijing and found a large amount of stolen and unstolen property. As the two brothers had committed too many crimes to distinguish between the two, the Public Security Bureau (PSB) seized all the valuables and confiscated them. The Х family only wanted to keep Wenbei and his family alive, and they did not protest....

The amount of stolen and non-stolen goods was impressive. Later on, a special exhibition was held in Ganjiakou on the crimes of robbery and theft in Wenbei and Wenzhong, which filled two halls. There is a wide variety of items. There were: bundles of RMB, Hong Kong dollars and a small amount of western currencies such as US dollars, pounds sterling, francs, West German marks, etc.; the whole country was not burned. Food stamps, oil stamps, scented oil stamps; whole buckets of watches of various brands and styles; suitcases full of fur coats, damask....

And a whole jar of sesame paste, a whole carton of tea eggs, a whole tub of sesame oil....

This exhibition was an eye-opener for every visitor.

After their arrest, Wenbei and Wenzhong were taken to various districts of Beijing to carry out criticism. These assemblies were of the same scale and style: a sea of people, heavy security, angry voices, chants from the masses... The difference was... It was at the criticism meetings, except at the Academy of Sciences, that the presiding officer, in order to stir up the crowd, announced the family origins of the Wenbei brothers as " Landlords", while Wenbei was declared a "historical counter-revolutionary" . This political label was put on indiscriminately, which added fuel to the anger of the masses at the meeting.

I attended a meeting of 10,000 people in the playground of the Academy of Sciences in Zhongguancun, where they criticized the Х brothers. The text of the criticism was not outrageous, because the people in the area knew the family well. The accusers, after recounting the crimes of the Х brothers, came to the conclusion of the official authorities: "This is the biggest and most serious crime since the founding of the People's Republic of China. One of the worst robberies and thefts of all time! ......."

I was hiding in the shade of a distant tree under the scorching sun that day, gazing sadly at the handcuffed and shackled H Х brothers across the crowded venue.

On the criticism stage, the Х brothers are expressionless, seemingly taking a resigned attitude to the dangerous situation and future. The half-breed pair were already born with an eyebrow, and the fatty bumps of over-nutrition that had been boiled away by a poor diet and a life behind bars were even more.  They appeared fair and clear, and also had a modest and elegant scholarly air. In short, it was impossible to connect the Х brothers with the bandits and thieves in the dark of the moon.

At the end of the criticism meeting, the Х brothers were escorted back to the prison room by five big policemen. Wenbei bowed and lifted the heavy shackles with both hands, trying to take a big step towards the police car, while Wenzhong followed the example of his eldest brother....

There's talk in my ear...

"These two bastards have lived to the end. They'll be shot under the Lugou Bridge. ......."

"Not necessarily! The eldest was a student prisoner (Wenbei was twenty-five years old, but still an unemployed student at Beijing's 47th High School). The old man is quite close to Premier Zhou again...hard to say!"

The latter watcher is quite insightful, but not thorough enough. The fate of the Wenbei brothers depends on the political situation in China and China's role in the international arena, not on the law.

The robbery and theft of Wenbei and Wenzhong have put the entire police force of the capital to shame: two (a mere number, a real embarrassment to the police) "bastards" have been running riot in Beijing for two years (between 1970 and 1972) with impunity!

The reason for this is that the Wenbei brothers were acting in accordance with Mao Zedong's strategic ideology: "Do not fight a battle you are not sure of and do not fight a battle you are not prepared for." Every case they worked on was preceded by an extremely thorough investigation and research, sometimes taking as long as a month.

The Wenbei brothers had good physical fitness, running, jumping, throwing all kinds of excellent, explosive power. To borrow a phrase from an opera novel, they had the "courage of a thousand men". They have also read many French mystery novels and put their knowledge of police struggle into practice, which has led them to many successes.

However, in the long run, the advantage of course belongs to the police. It was only a matter of time before the Wenbei brothers were caught.

The arrests of Wenbei and Wenzhong were delayed. The most bizarre story is this one: ...the Х brothers' uncle, General Gai Ruo, was arrested by the police. (Three promotions!) He came to China himself and bought his nephews' freedom with some high-tech information. The bastards are in Paris. ........

In the summer of 1974, in order to put an end to the growing number of rumors, the authorities held another public meeting in the playground of the Zhongguancun Academy of Sciences to criticize the Hu brothers and announced on the spot that the accomplice in this case, Wenzhong, would be sentenced to life imprisonment, while the main offender, Wenbei, would be dealt with separately.

The main offender, Wenbei, was sentenced to life imprisonment.

According to my relative (the city police had already lifted the military control, but he was still a well-informed person), someone was trying to get Zhou Enlai to take him back to Yunnan. The Premier's good intention is to propose a plan to deal with the situation: Wenbei is sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, and Wenzhong is sentenced to life imprisonment. However, Jiang Qing insists on killing Wen Bei to avenge his death. After weighing the two options, this is the result.

"If an ordinary citizen had committed such a crime, he would have had ten heads chopped off," my relative sighed. Like a ball! ......."

The French Embassy in China sent a First Secretary to the Chinese Foreign Ministry to intercede in this matter. In the case of the brothers, please refrain from speaking out."

There was a reason behind this hard-line attitude: Premier Zhou Enlai was seriously ill, and Foreign Minister Qiao Guanhua, who was a good observer of the situation, had fallen prey to the "Gang of Four" and was defying his instructions.

After his arrest in August 1972, Wenbei spent the next year on death row at the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau....

According to one of the heroes of the Tiananmen Square Incident, who was once a friend of Wenbei's, Wenbei is very optimistic in prison and thinks he will be imprisoned at most. Twenty years in prison, no big deal. He used the bars every day to do pull-ups and then showed off to his fellow inmates, "Look, it's biceps; look at that. It's the triceps..."

In 1976, Premier Zhou Enlai and Chairman Mao Zedong died one after another. The wrecked mess they left behind had to be cleaned up by their successors, and so the course of Wenbei's life came to an end.

"A group of people are going to die before the National Day, and among them is Wenbei..." my relative let slip, "It was Premier Zhou who used to protect him all the time, Now people don't buy that from Hua Guofeng!"

I begged him, "Get me a ticket for the public adjudication meeting, we've been friends for a long time, we should see each other one last time...."

On September 29, 1976, the public trial was held in the Haidian District Stadium. As it was a period of national mourning, security at the stadium was extremely tight. At the entrance to the stadium, the participants took off the black veil on their left arm to avoid paying tribute to the condemned prisoners ...

At that time, a thought jumped into my mind: maybe, right now, this is the only place in Beijing where there is no black veil? ........

This public meeting lasted less than an hour. First, several so-called "representatives of the masses" took the stage and spoke, demanding that the Government punish the criminals severely in order to rid the people of evil; then a cadre-like figure. The middle-aged man appears and announces that the people's government has decided to accept the demands of the masses and resolutely suppress the criminal black sheep in order to make the people angry...he I read out a long list of names, including that of Wenbei, who had been detained for four years and a month.

As they listened to the death sentence with grim expressions, Wenbei and the others were surprisingly calm, which made me wonder: was it really murder? Is this going to be another one of those plays? ........

Afterwards, I learned from the family that Wenbei had really been shot. There were no last words, no mementos, and no ashes.

Wenbei disappeared from this world. He was twenty-nine years old.

A few days later, Jiang Qing and his gang were arrested. Xinmou and his wife sighed in relief: "If they had defeated the Gang of Four a few days earlier, Wenbei would surely have survived! ......."

Having lost their beloved eldest son, the couple, each belonging to a different race, age at an alarming rate....

After the Third Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, all the children of the family left for France, with the exception of Wenzhong, who was serving a prison sentence in Yunnan.

The youngest son of the family, Wen H (whose name is withheld in order to avoid confusion), wrote to President Mitterrand, asking him to pay attention to the prisoner; Mitterrand replied that he would raise the matter with the Chinese leadership during his visit to China....

In 1983, Wenzhong was released from prison. His sentence was reduced directly from life imprisonment to 11 years' imprisonment, which was an important step in the new Chinese judicial practice of "20 years". Rare.

The story of the Х brothers ends here. In conclusion, it may be well to give another account of.

Mrs. Xinmou was so depressed that she finally died shortly after her release in Х. The former member of the French Communist Party was taken to the Zhongguancun Hospital on a three-wheeled flatbed cart and died under poor medical conditions.

Xinmou himself was not implicated in the "Wenbei and Wenzhong Brothers" case, and has traveled abroad several times to participate in international academic exchanges. He is now retired and enjoying a generous pension. Between China and France, Xinmou chose the former. He paid a high price in life (Wenbei once mocked his father: "Is Beijing or Paris better?"). ...What's the point of being a scientist if you can't even settle this little score?!"

Wenzhong now works for a French company in Beijing. The former prisoner has become a respected foreign employee. Such a man is a "hot commodity" for Beijing girls. He is married to a beautiful young woman and has a comfortable, warm family.

Recently, Wenbei's youngest brother came to the United States from Paris for a visit, and we had a drink and a chat about the past and present. He said sadly, "If Wenbei had lived until now, he would have been forty-one years old. His ashes are still missing..."

So, I had the idea to tell this story to the world.

If the life of my late friend Wenbei can be summed up in one sentence, it would be "a young man of mixed Chinese and French desires to go to university but in the end fails to do so". tragic fate in China." (The reason given by the French Government to the Chinese side was that "this case is clearly the result of the unfair treatment of mulattoes".)

If Wenbei's bones are missing, then where does his soul reside?

I'm guessing it's at Soburn University.
